  NUSWS Ensemble Competition (27/7/06)

a memorable evening, where nusws members get the chance to show their musical abilities!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the auditorium was opened as early as 3pm, for those who wanted to come early and practise. kudos to ben and cloud for setting up the chairs and everything!

as members started arriving, they only did one thing.. practise, practise and practise! haha

the band was honoured to have shyan-hwei, our cfa officer-in-charge, as the guest of honour for the evening. also, not forgetting.. our 2 distinguished judges, dr mak and mr tan!

and so the ensemble competition began, with the different groups performing a wide range of repertoire, from classical to pop to jazz. suffice to say, it was very entertaining!
the groups are:

1. the volunteers (brass ensemble)
2. not just a horn quartet (horn quintet)
3. Flute Quartet
4. a consortium of lower brasses
5. Woodwind Quintet
6. Sax bombs
7. Take 5
8. Pleasuremax
9. Clarinet Trio

special mention goes out to the horn section and jason, for playing and arranging an original score: Pirates of the Carribean! Jason will receive a prize for his hard work! also, to the flutes, nice section t-shirt! =)

here are some pics! (sorry ah they're not very high quality cos i didn't wanna use flash photography and disturb the players performing. also i was too busy with my sax section preparing for our performance! i think ben should have much clearer and better pictures for this part. must ask him! haha)

after the performances, it was time for a break, but not before taking a picture of everyone together! =)

while the judges deliberate on the results, it was time for food!! for this special occassion, our welfare officer, derek, has ordered a special pizza.. unagi pizza! haha.. i also never hear before one, but tastes not bad la, haha..

time for pictures!

time for pizza!!!

unfortunately, dr mak had to leave early because of work commitments. but before he left, the band presented him with a token of appreciation. a custom-made nusws ice-cream-stick box with lots of sweets inside!

after the hearty eating and merry-making, it was time to head back into the auditorium to await the results of the ensemble competition.

before the results were announced, mr leonard tan congratulated everyone on a job well-done and it had been an entertaining evening. he reminded everyone not to take the results too seriously as music itself is objective and that judging the different groups and styles of music was like judging between apples and oranges!

results! mr tan said that he and dr mak had the unanimous and same rankings for the 1st and 2nd position ensembles, but since they differ which group should be 3rd placed, they have decided to award a joint 3rd to two groups. shyan-hwei will be announcing the results..

in joint 3rd place..

lower brasses and woodwind quintet!
they've won a $50 swensons voucher!

in 2nd place..
take 5!
they've won a $80 swensons voucher!

and in 1st place..
SAX BOMBS! haha..
they've won a $100 swensons voucher!

before the proceedings end, tokens of appreciation were presented to both shyan-hwei and mr tan..

hope everyone has enjoyed themselves, regardless of the results.. till next year!! =)

ps. there is an official recording done for the event. nick is in the process of converting the md to mp3. must be patient ah! soon we can bug him for the recording, haha.. take care!

a commentary of my time in NUSWS. this blog is not intended as the official voice of NUSWS or NUS. just a member giving his views on the going ons in the band. some of the comments may not be pretty, but discussions are encouraged so that we can further improve the band. if there is any band matter you want to bring up to the exco or put in this blog, feel free to contact me or leave a comment. until then, take care!
