how do u get people to come for practices?
on the matter of attendance, how do you achieve good attendance for band practices? do you force them? coerce them? influence them? threaten them? punish them? =p

are there any studies or experiences you had that you would like to share in order to have better attendances? should practices be held on saturdays or strictly weekdays? for those with experience in outside bands, how do the practice schedules/attendance work? what did you all do to overcome these problems? for those with friends in other performing arts groups, what did they do to ensure good attendance?

how do you get people to attend band practices when:
1) its not compulsory
2) no benefits/loss if they do not do so
3) they have tests the next day
4) they can't be bothered to do so
5) etc etc..

do you:
1) have pretty/handsome ppl in the band?
2) play interesting pieces?
3) have nicer food during break?
4) threaten ppl with lesser cca points?
5) etc etc

how how how?? if you can give good ways to get attendance up i'll treat you lunch and give you a pair of free tickets to the next nusws concert. and thats a promise. =p

Comments:
haha... i think if u can get ppl to love this band, you're halfway there. I like what yokes said abt having our own band room.

But the thing is how feasible is that... haiz...

haha.. yeah.. dont think it'll be easy to get ourselves a bandroom. but a bandroom is a useful place to socialise, build bonds and hang out. maybe can ask cfa if such an idea is feasible. =p

if ya wanna get really passionate people in da band, just sack everyone and then get those who wanna stay on in da band to sign up again lor. with our own informal 'terms and conditions'. ahahahahaha.
simple. but tough and unreasonable to many. i dunno. it has been done before. but not at this level.

own bandroom. I WANT. grinz. can try and work things out.

yokes, ur suggestion abit too fierce but good sia. den we can set up a new band and have nicer name... HAHAHA... eh own bandroom not feasible la, unless u wan to build a container beside CFA :p

haha.. wah skali sack everyone but no one join back how? haha.. think wind symphony is quite a cool name leh, sounds quite professional. lets use yoke khee's room in eusoff as bandroom! haha..

i think one way to encourage attendance is thru constant encouragement and reminder. like before and after each prac, send out email to the band, outlining what the pracs gonna be like, or recapping the days events, etc. sort of like briefing/debriefing. would be nice to keep everyone informed.

we can start with this thursday's AGM! must send out email and promote, tell everyone what to expect, etc. if not all the food will only be eaten by the exco members! =p

eeeeekkkkks! hahah
if we can all fit in my room arh, i'd really be surprised! grinz..
yeah, debriefing is good. maybe after each practice the SC can comment about the day's musicality. =)

own bandroom, my fren juz sharing that maybe we can see if old conservatory can be used. otherwise, maybe can work with cfa to see how or what can be done? but then again, all these are not conrete. haha not until the exco meets so until then, haha. not much to comment abt own bandroom.

poor attendance pple - join join can. fun fun can. play play can. perform for concert cannot.
kick those who don't practise out of concerts lor. very common wad :P
then kill 2 birdies with 1 stone - won't receive so many -ve feedbacks since most major screwups are due to those pple who don't turn up for pracs.

band room will be a very good idea for bonding i feel. :) ccas like CSC got their own room and all that..yea..

Alison join exco!!!

"successor" is the word, alison :-)

haha.. alison, we're thinking more of a 'sponsor-finding' post la, u with sharon and amanda, then won't be so jialat when its time to find sponsors.

oh yea..successor.. :P paiseh..
my eng is in shambles n i've moots tmr..!!! *sobs*
hmm..i volunteer to buy food every band prac..tats like my forte ;)
hm..i noe this is pretty bimbotic..
BUT
i jus realised this is firdaus's private blog!!!
omg..u haf a private blog about nusws...
and there i was wondering why we need 2 nusws blogs..

haha.. its more like a 'newspaper' blog abt nusws la, written by me, plus comments frm anyone. for discussion on issues. no tagboard here! haha

I was planning to launch an invective at commitment level in the band...but there was no point talking about commitment when all who attended the practice were the more committed people.

Perhaps it would be necessary to say that every band member who wants to stay another year must attend elections or AGM unless s/he is unwell or has class.

must keep your word hor, if not i'll get xiaoxuan to sue you, haha..

-----------
little bird, if only we could do what you proposed. but we cant force ppl to come if they dont wish to =(

Draft up the law in the constitution - basic membership requirement is to

1. attend AGM and elections AND
2. come for 80% of band prac or something

Not that hard to find commitment in buckets...

...and maybe fine them $50 if they do. Then we can get more money to buy more scores/instruments/etc etc.

Not sure if that last one was a joke :P

Can have your MSN pls? e-mail it to me if it's ok.

Errata - 3rd last paragraph should read:

"...and maybe fine them $50 if they don't fulfil those criteria. Then we can get more money to buy more scores/instruments/etc etc."

On second thoughts, can also show them the door....phwoah. Turnover rate will be v high.

Unfortunately, that is a very JC/sec school band style. "You don't come, I fine you, or kick you out of band."

I know commitment is an issue. It really is disheartening to see that the attendence for AGM is around 30, when we have 82 who performed for InTempo, even after I mentioned that we were voting for conductor.

But at the same time, there are no barriers to entry into this band. We had sought to remain audition-free for a simple reason: to provide an avenue for band people who likes to play to come and join us in music making.

To implement those measures would be akin to telling people not to come for band and have fun. They feel compelled to come. It's very sad, because it is oxymoronic. We want them to come and have fun, yet they come and are not having fun. Kind of defeats the purpose.

And, just as a friendly spite, if you think fining $50 can allow you to buy instruments, you are so wrong. Wauahaha!! Firstly coz instruments at least 1k one lah. You'll need 200 people to not come for one year. Haha.. And also, it's a different financial account lah. ;-p

I forgot to mention, that from what I see, there is a very simple solution:

Get a conductor that is super appealling, that people will want to come coz he is damn zai and they learn a lot.. Hmmm.. duno if I'm wishing for too much though.. hahah

hmm.. u noe wad? i think ritez.. u can try involving everyone in stuff.. i tot i tagged this but apparently i dint.. :P
like.. jobs for concert, split the whole band up into committees, like ticketing committee..maybe banner com? or poster com to design poster?
a whole welfare committee for the welfare of the band throughout the entire intensive prac period b4 concert? publicity com to boost up tix sales.
donno if u all haf been doing it. but rather than trying to ask people to volunteer and all that, mite as well throw them into committees, perhaps with some friends. den if they get to noe more people better i think people will be more committed and see it as a band effort.
at least this is wad we did back in rg and hc, even non -exco members were very very involved in concert preparationz.
seems like exco doing most of the work here. yups. ::)juz my 2 cents worthz..
u realli must get people to love a band b4 u get a good band . yeaaa..

wait..i mean..u cant force them to go down for committee meetings and all that..but i believe if u slap people wif responsibility they will take it up. and do it well..n when they see the results of wad they have done it'll be a very very nice feeling :) yaa lor..

actually i dont think nusws members are not uncommitted. they just choose the pracs which they deem are impt enough to go (eg. just before concerts).

the challenge is how do we attract them for those not so important pracs. for important events like AGM and elections, how do we attract more people to come? or can we schedule them to occur during less busier times (eg. middle of the sem rather than end of the sem, where all the tests/revisions are occurring)

wah sey, the first line is confusing, haha.. "actually i dont think nusws members are not uncommitted."

what i meant to say is, 'i dont think nusws members are uncommitted'

Thing is, the "no-audition" policy also means that the band may also not enjoy making music (and having fun as a result), if the piece doesn't end out sounding good simply because some players are not technically good enough to play more challenging pieces.

I guess it depends on whether the aim of the band members is whether they joined this band is more to be alongside their friends or to simply make good music together as a group (hopefully in equal abundance, of course).

On the $50 thing :-) I get the point entirely...just half-joking.

my section too big! need to have auditions liao for new members, haha

Hahah.. Your section call BIG? I got at the last count 21 clarinets. Thatz like a quarter of the band lah. o.0

heh, but we have no more instruments to spare liao. and sax section if too big sounds horrible!
